Brown Spots

Three things you can do at home to get rid of brown spots

By Dr. Paula Dhanda

Brown spots on your face and hands can make you look much older. Fortunately there are effective treatments that you can use at home to remedy this.

1: Protect your skin with sunblock and antioxidants

One of the main causes of brown spots is sun exposure so it is important to use a micronized zinc sunblock everyday to protect your skin from damaging rays. You need a sunblock with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 to prevent the sun from creating more brown spots or to prevent darkening of your existing hyper-pigmentation.

Antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E protect your skin by fighting free radicals. They protect your skin from future damage and repair existing damage caused by harmful rays, bad nutrition and other environmental factors.

2: Suppress the production of brown pigmentation

This is sometimes called bleach cream but this is not quite accurate. Hydroquinone and Kolic acid actually suppress your skin cells (melanocytes) from producing more brown pigment. It does not "bleach" your existing brown spots.

3: Exfoliate the outer layer of skin

Retinol or glycolic based products act to peel off the layers of old cells that accumulate over time and hold the brown pigmentation.

This home regimen is highly effective for most people. If this does not alleviate your problem you may need to see your skin care specialist to add medical grade peels or laser treatment.
